Where are you from?
Free From Gravity are from Portsmouth, United Kingdom.
Describe your sound:
Currently we describe it as Kick Assed Chilled Out Rock – Melodic Rock With Attitude. However, our live show is more Symphonic Space Rock and this is the direction we are heading in (Think Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, Crimson Tide)
Tell us about your latest project:
I’ll Be Home For Xmas Day is our Christmas single, which was written on a Submarine over 29 years ago. We are involved in helping the homeless in our City and have teamed up with a local homeless refuge, initially providing a Jam night which was so popular with the residents there we decided to get some instruments in and form a homeless band. That is now in progress. We ran an appeal 2 weeks ago (end of November) and managed to get donations for pretty much all the instruments. On Friday, (Dec 1st) we put on a show to raise awareness of the homeless situation and entry was free but we asked for donations of items that could help the homeless such as sleeping bags, gloves, hoodies, jumpers, coats etc. We were bowled over by the number of donations.
The Xmas single will be used to help as well. All the money raised from the sales of the Xmas single this year will go towards getting the last remaining pieces (cables. Microphones etc) to get the homeless band project up and running. Some of the band will be acting as tutors to the homeless band and some musicians have kindly donated their time to teach them also.
Who inspires you?
Musically – Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, The Eagles, Whitesnake, U2, Coldplay and although I do not really like his music – Michael Buble for his sheer determination to make it in music.
Non musically – Sir Richard Branson – he has a saying – “When opportunity knocks, open the door and welcome it in. Then worry about how you are going to deliver it afterwards.”
That’s pretty much how we live.
How did you get into music?
I was writing poetry when I was 13. At 15 I was in a garage band (I mean literally a band that played in my parents garage). At 21 Iput my first song to music. At 38 I started playing live and in 2010 (aged 46) I decided that music was where I wanted to be. I come alive when playing live and feed off the audience.
Where do you see your career in 5 years?
I would hope that we are living the dream – which is to play in front of 10,000 people and have them sing our songs back to us. We can get them singing – our latest show was to 100 people and they were all singing along to the songs( quite amazing as they had never heard them before) – now it is just a matter of scaling up.

Tell us something about yourself that the people need to know:
The band was named after a Bra
Yes really –after a bra!
November 2011. Returning from the studio, I saw a billboard that said “Free Yourself From Gravity – Wonderbra” with, I believe, Eva Herzegova staring down at me.
I thought “What a fantastic name for a band” (Free From Gravity not Wonderbra)
The rest, as they say, is history
